Lockney business going to the dogs By TERRY MOORE Globe-News Staff Writer LOCKNEY - A hand-painted wooden sign hanging inside TALA Kennels and Game Birds gives a good indication of what the business is all about. "I got a dog for my wife," the sign reads. "It was a good trade." TALA, which is located about 12 miles north of Lockney on Farm-To-Market Road 378, is owned and operated by the father and son team of David and Chad Frizzell. They offer dog training, guided hunts for quail, pheasants and chukars on 60,000 acres and they also sell birds. Occasionally, they even have puppies looking for a good home. "You might add consulting on hunting leases to that list," David Frizzell said. But the newest thing TALA has to offer is a dog training video called "Truths in Training." "I've wanted to make one for years now," David Frizzell said. "Cost was the main thing that kept us from doing it earlier. But it's not nearly as expensive as advertising." It took five days to record the video, David Frizzell said. His nephew, Blake Webster from Kansas, handled the production. "This kid in unbelievable," David Frizzell said. "The way he put this thing together is very professional. "The video pretty well takes you from the beginning of deciding what breed of a dog to buy to whether you should buy a trained dog or a puppy. Once you buy the dog, it takes you all the way through training." David Frizzell said the video ends with the owner having a finished dog, but there is no way to cram all the information needed into one tape. The tape is two hours and 20 minutes long. "It's a joke to say it covers everything," he said. "You've got to be able to use common sense and psychology or you're not going to make it." Both Frizzells said they were not nearly as at home sitting in front of the camera as they were working with dogs. "I wasn't comfortable at all," David said. "When we were in the field with dogs, it was as comfortable as old shoes." "Truths in Training" is available by calling 652-2540 during the day, 652-2151 in the evening or from their web page: talakennels.com. It costs $49.95, Chad Frizzell said. David Frizzell has been training other peoples dogs for about 10 years. Chad Frizzell said they have room for 32 dogs at TALA and his dad can keep a few more dogs at his house. They do both hunting and general obedience training, David Frizzell said. |
